Black History Mini Docs - Betty Shabazz
Betty Shabazz (May 28, 1934 – June 23, 1997), born Betty Dean Sanders and also known as Betty X, was an American educator and civil rights advocate. She was the wife of Malcolm X. Shabazz grew up in Detroit, Michigan and moved to New York City, where she became a nurse. It was there that she met Malcolm X and, in 1956, joined the Nation of Islam. The couple married in 1958. Along with her husband, Shabazz left the Nation of Islam in 1964. She witnessed his assassination the following year. Left with the responsibility of raising six daughters as a single mother, Shabazz pursued a higher education, and went to work at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York. Following the arrest of her daughter Qubilah for allegedly conspiring to murder Louis Farrakhan, Shabazz took in her young grandson Malcolm. He set a fire in her apartment that caused severe burns to Shabazz. Shabazz died three weeks later as a result of her injuries.

GET READY FOR X MONTH 2020
Join Black History Mini Docs as we turn the month of May into “X MONTH”. Its our annual month-long tribute to the life and legacy of Malcolm X. Born Malcolm Little, and later known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, Malcolm was a writer, teacher, minister and human rights activist, and also a courageous advocate for the rights for blacks in all parts of the world. Often misunderstood or misinterpreted, Malcolm was one of the first Black men in America who would publicly indict and accuse White America in the harshest terms for its crimes historically, against Blacks in America.
MalcolmX was orphaned early in life, would go on to become a hardened criminal, and then reborn as one of the greatest voices against White entitlement and the historical racism that plague America in the 1950s and 60s. Today, many people feel there has been a resurgence in the racial climate and tensions that existed more then 60 years ago. That's why it's so important for us to revisit Malcolm’s insightful speeches as a source of inspiration and guidance, so that history won't repeat itself.
In honor of our “Black Shining Prince”, we will premiere brand-new Mini Docs, historical video clips, classic quotes and, much more. I personally can't wait to show you what we have in store. BHMD is proud of our Executive Producer Neema Barnette who has directed 2 episodes of National Geographic (Nat Geo) networks limited television series, Genius Aretha. Neema teams up with producing director Anthony Hemingway (Red Tails, Underground) and show runner Pulitzer Prize winner Susan Lori Parks (TopDog Underdog). Two time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo stars as Aretha Franklin. The limited series premieres later this year. All hail the Queen!
